Just got off the Grande Ronde river...........

..................and once again was just flippin' crowded!!! My group was just one boat, so was able to get off and on the water early, so no problems for us. Would go by camps early in the AM, and maybe 1 out of 10-12 would be open. Once at camp, in late PM (5 PM +), would still see rafts float by us looking for a spot............

But how long until it goes to a permit system? Good data would help-- I have asked the BLM to post online the stats they keep for usage, and all I get back is "blah, blah, blah".

Sigh. As if it needs to be some kind of secret.

Your thoughts?

We just finished our trip on Saturday, took out at Hellar bar. Stayed at every camp we planed. Really no crowd at all

We just got off it yesterday. More people than Iíve ever seen on the upper portion. Not a lot of people on day two or three, but... last weekend we didnít see near the crowds, but it was flowing above 5k.
Iím not above getting up early, floating for a couple hours, then spending the afternoon in a lawn chair.

Iím not a fan of permits. To much of my money goes to the government as it is. Most of it is nothing more than a money grab. Look at the amount they must pull in from the Deschutes, where does that all go?

We typically put in on Sunday and pull out on Tuesday. Most of the weekend crowds are at least a day in front of us.

Got off the river yesterday am- the bridge take out was empty. There were a lot of people, but we never had an issue getting camps. The campsites were cleaner than in years past, few fire scars- looks like people are taking better care of it. We had a great trip.

THANK YOU for the photo of river usage! I always wondered how many people used the river.

I guess we got lucky. We put in, at Minam, Sunday, 6/30. We took out Tuesday, 7/2 at Powwatka Bridge. We hardly saw anybody. Campsites were wide open. We did see several bald eagles, Ospreys, a few otters, and a group of mountain goats, up close and personal.
