Grand Canyon Signal Panels Orange "X"

I have a Grand trip coming up next month and trying to make sure I don't get turned away at the put in for not having some "required equipment".

I am trying to figure out where to get the orange signal panels they talk about for aircraft notification. This the passage out of the regs.

C.Communications and Signaling Emergency signaling equipment must include a signal mirror of the U.S. Air Force type and two international orange colored panels, each measuring 3 foot x 8 foot, that can be placed in an “X” so as to be visible from aircraft. In the event of an emergency, the symbol “X” marked or placed on the ground by any means will signify that help or emergency aid is necessary. Upon notification by observer, a helicopter will be dispatched by the National Park Service.

What have other people done, or where can i find these. I Googled it and did not find much and also called the river permit office and they were stumped as well. Last time I can the Big Ditch I was not the Permit Holder but I think they mailed them to him with the permit.

Any help is appreciated.

I bought a $10 orange plastic tube tent and cut it into two 3x8 sections then stored in a gallon ziplock. Works for Peggy everytime. Have a great trip!

Past discussions here on MB, looks like people either bought sections of nylon cloth at the fabric store, or they cut up a $8 orange tube tent.

Or buy an orange tarp, cut it into quarters, and share with a friend:

The official ones you'd find at an Army-Navy are only 1.6' x 72", so not big enough to pass the NPS inspection

Always used bright orange neon rain poncho, cut into two strips.

Orange tarp

I've used a $10 orange tarp cut in half last two trips. Passed no problem.

Even the GCPBA Wiki recommends the orange tube tent, so I would think that it is a common solution for many voters.

Ours have always been home made as well. Never had them open and inspect them so far, but I imagine that if they are to the size specs and color, they should pass if looked at.

Make sure ya got that signal mirror to. We forgot it once, and were told that a sat phone or inreach were not a substitute for the signal mirror. Thankfully someone on the trip had a mirror for there contacts.

We are a country of laws................ lots of them.

Congrats on the trip!!
