Dropping a kid off at college late August and thought we'd stay in Bozeman for a few extra days. We're looking for a place where we can put our inflatable kayaks in for a Class II run (maybe some IIIs, but nothing too big).
Any ideas here? Are the flows too low this time of year?
Depending on which way you are coming from, the lower Stillwater is runnable all summer. It is about 1.5 hours east of Bozeman to the put in. Nice day run and the only 3 is called the Beartooth drop. It's a ledge hole that is no big deal if you run it just left of center.
Put in at Grey Owl and take out at Mallards Rest on Yellowstone River south of Livingston. Grey Owl access site is 45 mins from Bozeman. Beautiful and easy 11 or 12 mile float.
Bear trap canyon on the Madison. Only class III rapid on there which you can portage is Kitchen Sink. Easy self shuttle, there is a company that does a shuttle on that stretch, or it is also easy to hitch that one.
Cant go wrong with the yellowstone south of Livingston. You might want to hit Chico hot springs whilst in the Paradise valley. There are shuttle services available as well
Man telling some class II IK boaters that Kitchen Sink is a class III rapid is a bit of a sandbag.
