Wet Suits needed ? Lower Animas in mid July

Hey guys

I will be taking my wife, kids 5 and 7, and me, on a rafting trip on the Lower Animas in mid-July, Durango CO.

Does anyone know if wet suits will be needed ?

Thank You

I took my kids down Saturday with no wetsuits. I can almost promise you there will be hardly any water on the Lower Animas in mid-July this year. Think 250 cfs which isn't too fun in a raft.

There is alot more to do in Durango, because there will definitely be a shortage of water again. If you have your heart set on rafting then you'll need to travel 4 hrs. up north to Glenwood Springs and get wet on the Colorado. It's called the "shoshone run" just east of Glenwood Springs. Good-luck!

If you go into it knowing it will be a low water calm rock bumping float then you will have a good time. The rafting company will tell you they highly recommend a wetsuit because the water is cold, but it is just a way to make a little more money. You will be very unhappy if you rent one.

July Lower Animas

The biggest obstacles for you on the lower Animas will be the tubers. They get mighty swarmy in July!

Thanks guys. We are going during a weekday, maybe that will reduce the crowds somewhat (maybe not!). This trip is for the kids, age 5 and 7, I am pretty sure they will find it "cool" to do the trip even if low water level. At least I hope....

thanks again
