San Juan Wood....

We have a San Juan permit in late June;

1. Do I need to bring fire wood or is there enough out there?

2. If I don't bring fire wood, does the ranger still want a "ash can"?

3. Do most people have fires on this trip? Seems warm!

Thanks,
Scott

PS Any other tips tricks from you San Juan Veterans????

Fire pan with fire blanket and a rocket box for all fire debris is the standard for the San Juan and most rivers in the area. It will definitely be hot but that shouldn't stop you from grilling up fat steaks and salmon. The ranger will expect to see all fire related items for sure. Don't forget to add a collapsable shovel and a a good pairs of gloves as well. Fire wood can be found in some areas. Bring a presto log or two and use the drift that you collect and you'll have more than you need.

On most of my San Juan trips the desert heat made a fire less than desirable. Dutch oven cooking or tending the BBQ in 112 degree heat should warrant hazard pay. Some nights only cooled down to the 90's.

The fire pan and fire blanket are required even during a fire ban, when carrying the firewood is prohibited! So bring all the required equipment for the launch inspection even if you don't expect to use it.
