I ended up on the Rio Cotahuasi with Rocky Contos (www.sierrarios
.org/) and crew last year. One of the reasons for the trip was informal documentation and research on a proposed dam in the lower canyon which would displace many, many families who have occupied the canyon for multiple generations. This is the deepest canyon in the world. Once the Cotahuasi gets dammed there literally is no place deeper to go!
As we descended the canyon I was informed that the Marañón has 20 proposed dams along its stretch into the Amazon! Two of those dams are in construction phase as we speak. Please educate and help any way you can. It's not too late. If you take a WW trip down to Peru, you may end up writing posts like this. If you love water, you will get involved anyway. Once the dams are in, these posts will disappear.
