New Mexico Whitewater - 1983
Picked up a nice copy of New Mexico Whitewater - A Guide to River Trips from the free shelf at the library a while back. I'm impressed by the tenacity and the daring adventure of the early boaters.
It was published by the NM State Park Division in 1983. Crafts of choice look to be rafts, open canoes, and long narrow river kayaks. Run descriptions include the Canadian, the Cimarron, all of the Chama, and that's just the C's. I think they covered every riffle in the state.
Several of the Outfitters and Guides listed in the references are still in business, many of them aren't. But man did they get after it, using less than perfect gear to run the likes of Rio Pueblo, Red River, and the Upper Taos Box.
So hats off to the brave pioneers of yesteryear. The book is dedicated to Robert Brewer, an expert kayaker who died on the Embudo River in May 1982.
