I'm new to rafting! (need advice)

Hello I would like some advise on rafting the Arkansas river. Im new to rafting and would like to know if I could raft from Salida to Parkdale. I have rafted from Canyon city to Florence, boy watch out for that water diversion damn! I have a 15' Riken. I would have four total in the raft. What a great sport I'm hooked!!!

kasey,

the section you're talking about has long stretches of fairly calm water with a few significant rapids in between. From Pinnacle Rock to Parkdale is a Class III section that is fairly challenging for a new rafter. you may want to check out the section between Valle Bridge and Cotapaxi.

I've done the salida to rincon section several times in my tributary tomcat IK and that section is pretty mellow with 2 milder class III rapids and splashy II stuff. It is afairly quick 6 or 7 mile stretch with easy shuttle. If you go past Rincon take-out that's where the more serious upper class III stuff is. Just get out at Rincon, large take-out. Chow!

Kasey,
AHRA has resources available online and at the visitor center in Salida that are designed to introduce new boaters to the sport safely. We direct them to different sections suitable to their skill level and point out hazards to be avoided like that nasty diversion (Minnequa Dam) between Canon City and Florence. Please call, come by or visit us online.

Thank you stew. I rafted Howard to Texas Creek yesterday. It was definitely a new rafter area. I love the sport. I bought a boat and had never rafted before I am now hooked. Thanks again
