Guiding in Australia/New Zealand

Has anyone guided down here recently?

I'm doing a ski season down here and looking to stay the summer, I've been guiding in Washington for a few years.

I've read some stuff on here already.
How long are the seasons?
Is it easy getting work?
- I heard or maybe read on here that its easier in oz.
Pay/amount of work?
- I just read in a recent thread about oz pay.
Any rivers better then others?
- I've been looking at the Tully.
Requirements to work?
- there might be a license in nz?

Any info would be great,
Thanks guys

Ps anyone ever boat or guide se Asia?

Dont know about Aus but if you head to NZ get your work visa figured out ahead of time. When I was there no one would even think about hiring you without it.

Same thing in OZ, it has been awhile since I worked on the tully, but i had to have my work visa dialed before getting there.

Specific to the tully, no license needed, but you have to train with them for a bit before you start to work. if you go to the tully there are two companies both of which are good, you will have the options of being based in Cairns and running the Tully as well as the Baron river, but traveling back and forth to the tully daily 1 1/2 hours each way. Go for being a tully guide based in Mission Beach. Smaller scene and awesome little town in the jungle on the water.

these rivers are dam controlled so they run year round, but their busy season is during the wet season which starts around oct/november and runs through march/april.

If you are a competent class IV guide that is comfortable on technical rivers you should be fine on the river stuff but the you need to train taking japanese customers down so you need to learn all of your basic river commands in japanese, then you need to learn all of the safety spots and the order in which you run and pull over to set up.

Down in Victoria, there isn't a hell of a lot of commercial rafting work. Most of the guiding is done with high school groups as Victoria has the largest Outdoor Education/recreation system per capita in the world. Season is between August and November during the spring. Rivers include: King River, Mitta Mitta River, Mitchell River, Snowy River, Goulbourn River, Big River, Macalister River to name a few... Most of these rivers are tight and technical, and low volume.
Get your working visa sorted before applying.
