Gauley Fest 2013 - Questions

Hey Buzzards,
I'm catching a break in my training this weekend and it just so happens to be Gauley Fest weekend.

I am looking to make the 5 hour drive up there have some fun since I missed paddlefest and fibARK.

What's rafting going to cost me for me and my wife up there? How's the environment as far as safety goes? I know it's always pretty awesome out west but didn't know if it was any different in the east.

Thanks!

A commercial raft trip on the upper G probably costs between $100 and 150. Gauleyfest weekend is pretty much a parade of club boaters in full face helmets with neoprene gloves on. Take the playboat.

Safety is subjective. Hordes of paddlers are there, and paddlers love carnage. On a raft trip, you should be fine. In your kayak, stay away from creeky lines unless you know for sure they are good. Stay in the main flow. I think of the Gauley as a terrain park for kayaks. You can take a creek slot, wave wheel, splat, surf, rock spin, or run the meat (and most combinations thereof) at lots of rapids.

If you don't know it, stay away from all rocks and in the middle of the current as Tango said. Can't be stressed enough. As a class V boater, my first couple runs down were solo-ish. I just followed video boaters through the big rapids in my playboat. As far as safety, you should have some sort of arrangement with your boating partners or be really solid. There is definitely an attitude from some of the senior guys of letting the rookies learn to clean up their own mess. People will jump in if there's danger, but there's just too many swims to help empty random peoples boats and continue to make downstream progress. It's easily the best single day raft run in America!

Thanks for the replies guys. I was mostly referring to safety in the civilian perspective for my wife, like if I leave her at camp while I go run it in the kayak.
Prices are a bit steeper than I expected but I'm sure it'll be well worth it.
