Gates of Lodore in a 18' raft in Aug?

Will a 18' hog fit down this stretch with low August flows?

august in Lodore

A few years ago I made a august Lodore float. Basically only the minimum release from the dam.

Many of the named rapids were very rocky. We were able to scrape down but it was not easy.

Yampa was really low that year as well.

Split Mountain rapids were extremely rocky and most required us to get out and push pull as it was common to get stuck.

This was in 14 ft rafts. We had a great time but the raft bottoms took a beating.

Lightly loaded 18 foot rafts might make it down, but I would be prepared to do a lot of pulling off rocks.

Then one of my buds made the same trip a few weeks later. Some how the dam pushed up the release to much higher levels and they had a ball with no issues.

Rumor on the street is Lodore is going to be kicken it at 800 cfs all summer (LOW!). I use to guide up there and we ran 18’ fully loaded boats and made it down, usually. I would take it but expect to get stuck more than a couple of times. I would try to keep it as light as you can. SOB in split will be the hardest rapid if the Yampa is dry. Answering your question - it will fit.

The current single-peak release schedule out of FG dam should still be in effect thru August. Check the Greendale guage, you can see it ranges form base flows of 850 to about 2100 each day. It takes about 24 hours to hit the Lodore RS. you may have some bony areas depending on the time of day, through Lodore, but if you are on the high tide you should not have problems in Lodore.

Split will be bony, regardless, as there will be little inflow from the Yampa.
