Butte Fork of the Applegate

The Butte Fork of the Applegate is a tributary to the Upper Applegate in way Northern California. Its within the Red Butte Wilderness Area and requires a short downhill hike to access the creek. The take-out is at the confluence with the Upper Applegate, which has a road following it. The short run starts off pretty mellow (class II / III) but the character of the creek changes dramatically in its final mile descent into the Applegate. The run out is very continuous Class IV V (V+ in some places) with the random log thrown in for good measure.

Is that the section looking upriver to the left after crossing the bridge just past the upper put in? Always wondered about that when I lived down south. Looked super steep but very boatable. Access seemed to mandate a hike in. Love to see video if you have any.

Yes, I think so... Heading upstream from the the main bridge that crosses the Applegate toward the bottom of the run (FS Road 1040)... Then, a few miles up, another bridge crosses the Applegate. Now the Applegate is to your right as you head upstream. There's a creek you go over with a bridge and then it's the next bridge that is the Butte Fork. It's the first creek after the Horsecamp Trailhead. Stay on 1040 to get to the Shoofly Trailhead (access to the creek).

Very cool. Love that area. About as remote as it gets just beyond Oregon border.
