Grand Canyon 2018 Noncommercial River Trip Permit Lottery

Grand Canyon 2018 Noncommercial River Trip Permit Lottery

The lottery for 2018 Grand Canyon river permits will open Wednesday. Good luck to everybody! Here is the Park's announcement:

On Wednesday, February 1, 2017, the National Park Service will begin accepting applications for noncommercial river trip permits to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. The permits are for specific launch dates within calendar year 2018. A total of 463 permits will be available for 12- to 25-day river trips. Eligible individuals may apply online at the weighted lottery website (https://grcariverpermits.nps.gov). Applications will be accepted online through noon Mountain Standard Time on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.

Each year in February, a main lottery is held to assign launch dates for river trips occurring the next year. Public notifications regarding main lotteries are made by both email and news release. In addition to the annual main lottery, follow-up lotteries are held as needed throughout the remainder of the year to reassign canceled and/or left-over river trips. Public notifications for these follow-up lotteries are made through email, an RSS feed, and Twitter (twitter.com/GCRiverPermits).

The weighted lottery website can be accessed for free year-round to create or modify an account and to sign-up to receive email notifications. Individuals who are interested in a future noncommercial river permit are strongly encouraged to create an account. Lottery applications are accepted through the weighted lottery website only when lotteries are open.

Individuals must be 18 years or older to apply for a river trip permit. Noncommercial river trips must be self-guided, and technical whitewater experience is mandatory on each trip. Individuals may participate on a maximum of one recreational river trip per year (commercial or noncommercial).

Individuals interested in professionally-guided river trips should not apply through the lottery, but instead request space on a commercial trip. A list of commercial companies offering guided trips can be found by visiting https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvis...cessioners.htm.

For more information about the 2018 Main Lottery, please visit the Grand Canyon National Park web site (https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvis...tedlottery.htm), contact the River Permits Office at 1-800-959-9164 or 928-638-7884, or email us at [email protected].

Throwing my 1 point in as well. I heard they aren't allowing any mid-March launches for 2018, even though the calendar doesn't show that. Make sure you dont waste your choices on that! Tell your friends!

I have a December, 2017 launch, taking out in late January, 2018.

So if I pull a permit for the day after I'm planning to take out, can I do the whole thing over again?

I've though about back to back dec/jan trips- I cant find anything that tells me you couldn't do it.

Yes, the terms of the lottery do not preclude you from submitting an application in Jan 2018. Now, it'll be a scramble to get from the takeout to Lee's having restocked on food, etc. all in one day!!

You can be on only one launch date during both 2017 and 2018. It doesn't matter if your Dec 2017 trip finishes January 20 or any date in 2018, you can still be on any 2018 launch.

So yeah, try for a Jan 2018 trip and do the back to back trips.
