"Right then they dropped into a massive trough—only this was not a trough, it was a huge hole, which instantly jettisoned Reed out and over the bow of the raft! All at once his world was complete chaos as he hit the ice-cold water. The shock was like diving head first into a washing machine of ice cubes. It scared him as much as it froze him instantly!
Suddenly, Reed got sucked down deep, deep, deep, his lungs felt like they would explode, and then at the last moment, finally, he found himself heading back up towards the surface as he kicked and paddled with all his might. He broke the surface just in time to get air! He took one huge gulp before he got dumped into the next hole, which was even bigger and badder then the first. This time he got re-circulated or 're-circed' as they say on the river. Basically he was at the river's mercy, like a rag doll riding a wild angry bull. The powerful current of that hole took Reed in and spun him round and round for about ten seconds, then he would get a gulp of air, then it sucked him down for another thirty seconds, then he would get another gulp, then it would suck him down for another round, and another. Finally he realized he had no choice—he had to do what Ang had taught them to do in a worst-case scenario.
Ang told them that if they ever got caught in a 'keeper' they might have to swim for the bottom of the river, as that is where they would find the least amount of turbulence, and in a worst-case scenario, they might have a chance to swim out of the washing machine if they went deep enough. So Reed sucked in the biggest breath of air he could muster, and this time he didn’t fight the current, he simply let it take him down as it had wanted to all along…five feet…ten feet...fifteen feet…finally it seemed to be loosening its grip on him slightly as he started to swim even deeper...twenty feet...twenty-five feet…Reed hit thirty feet before he could actually swim…and swim he did, downstream, and out of the raging washing machine!
Finally he was out of its grip but needed air desperately! He kicked and paddled with all his might and finally broke the surface: he sucked in a mouthful of water as he gasped for the air he desperately needed. He coughed violently as he tried to keep his head above the water, and it was in this moment that his worst fears came true. He was at the top of Boulder Falls— a massive set of 'falls'— and he pitched right down the middle of them!
Momentarily he found himself air-born, flying down the 60-degree gradient, tumbling, bouncing off the water as he tried to swim. He gasped for air as he plunged down the hundred-yard-long falls, choking on water as he gasped for air, hacking on it violently as he began to think this was the End. Down, down, down he plunged, but something inside him told him to fight, keep fighting, Reed, Keep Fighting! It was at that exact moment that he caught a flicker of bright yellow and red through the barrage of white water engulfing him as he careened through the roaring gauntlet of hell…"
