Very good read on cultural shifts happening now

Welcome to Colorado | Fringe's Folly

This article came across my FB feed yesterday. It's a good read from a climbing blog that starts off describing an encounter out on the plains with a big burly pissed off guy in his big truck. The writer goes on to skillfully remind us of the difference between the culture many of us live in, that of the environmentally-focused outdoor recreation enthusiasts with money to spend on big kid toys, and that of "flyover country" that has responded enthusiastically to the "build a wall" mentality.

If you're short of time then feel free to skip down to the second or third section or the article. or just read the excerpt below

Quote:
I can imagine how he feels. Hes just one more part of an increasingly disenfranchised group of people called the American white middle class. And no, Im not telling some sob tale about how the white middle class is underprivileged. Im not comparing them to blacks in the inner city, or Mexican immigrants on farms legal or otherwise.

But you know what maybe I am. Maybe its time that somebody should. Being male middle class and white used to mean something, it used to carry some heft. It doesnt mean shit any more. It means you are culturally irrelevant. It means your farmlands can be turned into strip malls. It means your belief systems and cultural heritage is constantly berated, criticized, and laughed about by the mainstream media.

You want to understand why Trump is so popular with this demographic? Take a drive from Maryland to Colorado via I-70. Take a look at some of the towns in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas. Heres an idea, go somewhere that you will actually see lots of Trump posters, and see how long you can stay there. If youre reading this, youre almost certainly a climber, which means youre almost certainly wealthier or at least better off than most of the people in those towns.

You get in those towns and its like walking into a TS Eliot poem. Its easy for us to scoff at Make America Great again. Our people are winning the country. Liberalism is on the rise. Racism is on the ropes. But when you look at where the Trump supporters come from its crystal clear why theyre mad. Theyre dying. A slow and painful death.

Thanks. That guy said what I've been feeling for a while. Much as I dislike Trump, he's a symptom, not the problem. There are a lot of people out there who've been hosed by the changes in our country and are feeling abandoned by those who've at least done okay, and, given what they were promised when they were young, they have a right to feel that way.

put another way "when you all ya know is privilege, equality feels a lot like oppression"

the way out ain't blaming folks who look different, the way out is low-debt education and good jobs for people here.

is there any candidate anywhere got any clue how to make that happen? doesn't seem like it, if we can't even use historic low interest rates to take care of our backlog of infrastructure maintenance.

betcha you'll be paying a fee every time you merge onto your federal interstate by 2025.

That saying about privilege crossed my mind also when I read the article. Unfortunately when folks are panicked about their situation and prospects for the future, it's a lot more difficult for them to find the "better angels" of their persona.

And agreed about blaming people who look different.

It's like LBJ said, "If you can convince the lowest white man that hes better than the best colored man, he wont notice youre picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and hell even empty his pockets for you."

This election cycle has left Schutzie disgusted. A Billionaire with no filter on his mouth, a religious hypocrite, a career politician with enough scandal attached to make Nixon seem a saint, and a radical socialist with no clue that "free" is a concept, not a reality. This, after 8 years of divisive F^&K you politics and a debt that cannot even be remotely grasped.
The story underscores what we are becoming; a me and mine and F^$k you and yours mentality.
Whatever happened to the "You are an idiot and a scoundrel, but let me buy you a beer and lets be friends" attitude?
I mean, so what the other fellow is a putz; his problem, not yours.
