Undeveloped (free) camping from Four Corners to Carbondale?

I need to be in the Cabondale area at the end of the month. In the meantime, my family and I will be road tripping from Idaho south through Moab, Canyonlands, Four Corners then back up towards Carbondale (no particular route yet).

How difficult is it for a low-key dirtbag in a camper van to find public land to camp on between Four Corners and Carbondale? I'm hoping that it's more like Idaho than the Oregon coast. Never been to Colorado though.

Route recommendations and must-see attractions would be appreciated too! Will have no bikes or kayaks. Strictly a sight seeing camping road trip.

Tell me more about your van. VW 4WD? Ford 2WD? Converted Chevy? Ground Clearance an issue? You are going to be close to some of the most spectacular scenery in the U.S.. The more Offroad capable you are, the more you can see........
Peace

VW Eurovan. With the propane tank, it's got the ground clearance of a low-rider. I've learned to straddle and make do....though I'm still severely handicapped. Gravel roads and two tracks with the occasional rock are ok,

I leave Thurs. Thanks for what ever input you can provide!

I can't help you a lot but, because it hasn't been said, you definitely should come into Carbondale via Hwy. 133 over McClure Pass. I've camped off the pass but numerous RV opportunities exist between Marble and Carbondale.

Four corners up to Carbondale should be no problem for camping at large. However, camping is very sparse up around Carbondale. If you head in the direction of McClure Pass from Carbondale, you'll find a county road on the left side of the highway leading up to what the locals call Prince Creek Road that goes toward Mt. Sopris (it's labeled something else at the highway intersection). Follow it up past where it turns to gravel, and you'll find plenty of at large camping. The rest of the drive should be pretty good for camping.
