non-turbine wind alternative

has anyone seen this before? it seems like an interesting idea, though im curious as to how well the technology would transfer to a larger scale.

Very cool idea. Seems perfectly reasonable to increase the scale... and the output.

Looks like a good idea that could have less of an effect on birds. Still doesn't solve the problem of not having transmission lines with enough capacity to make a big difference though.

Nathan - good point about the transmission line issue. Nobody likes those things overhead (big hoohah in SoCal right now about them) in their backyard. What I don't understand is why we don't bury the transmission lines to eliminate the "unsightliness" aspect and help mitigate the magnetic field issue. Could be some technical reason I don't know of...

ds burrying the lines rips up land more than a drilling rig you are complaining about.

Yes it does, but once they're buried, it's pretty easy to reclaim that disturbed land. And burying them under/along existing rights-of-way means not disturbing undisturbed land. The bigger question in my mind is whether or not there's a technical reason for not burying the lines. I dunno...
