Gila Hearing in Santa Fe Thursday

FYI- They just scheduled the NM State Senate Conservation Committee hearing for this Thursday - attending and encouraging others to attend may help stop the destructive diversion plans for the Gila. I pasted an e-mail I received from the Center for Biological Diversity below which has the information. If you want to learn just how stupid the diversion idea is just Google news on "Gila Diversion".

Hope to see you there.

Please join me and other Center for Biological Diversity activists this Thursday, Feb. 26 for a Gila River hearing at the state capitol.

As you likely have already heard, a large and incredibly expensive diversion project now threatens to take Gila River water and pump it over the Continental Divide to farms and urban areas. But this diversion would be absurdly expensive -- costing us taxpayers more than $1 billion and causing serious damage to our state’s wildlife and outdoor economy that depend on this precious resource.

At the hearing, three Gila River protection bills -- S.B. 542, S.B. 455 and S.B. 461 -- will be up for votes, and if we aim to save this river from continued exploitation, it’s essential that we make a strong showing in support. For more information, check out And note: Hearings can change, so please check this schedule or email me directly for updates.

What: Senate Conservation Committee hearings on three Gila River protection bills
When: Thursday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. (subject to change)
Where: New Mexico State Capitol (Roundhouse), Room 311, Santa Fe, N.M.

Hope to see you there!

Good suggestion, though I can't seem to move the thread.

The bills will now be heard on Tuesday as the hearing started late, ran late and only 1 of 3 bills was even brought up (and that bill was tabled until Tuesday as well). I'm not sure I can make it Tuesday, and I really feel bad for the folks who drove from the Gila area as it's ~7 hours by car to Santa Fe.

There is real easy math that demonstrates the diversion can't possibly yield more than 1/3 of the water the ISC is promising, but they actually testified that they can't know anything about the yield until the entire project is designed! (That allows them to spend over $20 million designing it...) And heck, once they design it, the Gila may magically have 5x more water in it every year. It's unreal to watch this kind of shit in real time.

OK, I could rant forever about this but many good journalists have written in depth articles trying to be neutral, so I need not add my jaded observations to the pile of evidence that the diversion is a ridiculous boondoggle and the ISC is corrupt and out of control.
