From the good ol days file

Dave Barry reminds us what made America great.
I ask the Buzz: Have we lost it?

You know what I miss? I miss 1960. Not the part about my face turning overnight into the world's most productive zit farm. What I miss is the way the grown-ups acted about the Kennedy-Nixon race. Like the McCain-Obama race, that was a big historic deal that aroused strong feelings in the voters. This included my parents and their friends, who were fairly evenly divided, and very passionate. They'd have these major honking arguments at their cocktail parties. But unlike today, when people wear out their upper lips sneering at those who disagree with them, the 1960s grown-ups of my memory, whoever they voted for, continued to respect each other and remain good friends.

What was their secret? Gin. On any given Saturday night they consumed enough martinis to fuel an assault helicopter. But also they were capable of understanding a concept that we seem to have lost, which is that people who disagree with you politically are not necessarily evil or stupid. My parents and their friends took it for granted that most people were fundamentally decent and wanted the best for the country. So they argued by sincerely (if loudly) trying to persuade each other. They did not argue by calling each other names, which is pointless and childish, and which constitutes I would estimate 97 percent of what passes for political debate today.
What I'm saying is: we, as a nation, need to drink more martinis.

No, you know what I'm saying. I'm saying, now that this election is over, whatever the hell happened, can we please grow up and stop being so nasty to each other? Please?

I'm cool with the martini thang, but my preference is vodka. James Bond (ala Sean Connery) was the Jesus of Cool.

I think the current ugliness got underway in earnest in 1994. The battle lines were drawn by Gingrich/Clinton and partisanship went from being useful part of the DC dynamic to being destructive. Obama can make some make-nice gestures with his cabinet announcements. Bringing in some Repubs would helpful. Getting McCain to act as a Congressional Repub liaison would be helpful. Getting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Keith Olbermann some emergency enemas would be helpful... followed by longterm fiber therapy.

Treating "liberals" and "conservatives" as objects of partisan hatred isn't productive... unless we're talking about the aforementioned infotainers. Hating them over bipartisan martinis is probably a good thang, especially if followed by bipartisan bowls.

....I hear ya'..

I think it has to do with stealing the most $$$, obtained through Nazi Party tactics...make up anything and say it 50 times...to stay in power, regardless of what your actions do to the country's well-being. As long as the Conservative platform controlled the media and could get as many $$$ as they could via WallStreet, Halliburton, and other phony contractors in Iraq....regardless of what tactics behind a lack of strategy they sent our men and younger women into ground combat with, and come out smelling clean for the next election....life is good... Their social lives are what they've always been.....substantive only in their minds. Every f**king Conservative should be taken out and executed, plain & simple...well I'll let K. Gingrich stay...I think he's pretty darn good. As mentioned, since 94', it's been nothing but corruption!

This is the exact opposite of what this post is about. It's time to stop arguing about which party has been right or wrong and start paying attention to what the current party is going to do to fix it. We will get a lot further by holding the Dems accountable now instead of pointing fingers at the GOP for the past.

Big Spencer most of what you said was true, even understand the 'should be executed" sentiment, but it is counterproductive and makes us as bad as them.It kind of pisses me off that we are supposed to be nice after all he crap they pulled. There should be consequences for their actions, hopefully the real consequence is that they did irreparable damage to their own ideology. So far post election the right wing pundits are in full blown denial and ratcheting up the fear and nastiness. It is probably better to take the high road and let them continue to erode what little credibility they have left .

Always enjoy ,Dave Barry's work.It would be nice if we could have more respectful disagreemnt. It would really help if there was a widely trusted non partisan fact base instead of devolving into making up your own facts.

I'm all about "making nice" with the defeated Repubs, but in no way does that mean that Cheney, Wolfie and Rummi get a "pass" in my book. I'd like to see a trial and an extended stay in Leavenworth for these PNAC douchebags. Did I mention Perle? Yeah, him too.
