Anyone use Cal Topo for map making

A friend told me about Cal topo and how I can add different maps/layers. I figured I could use these for hiking as well for rafting. It's a little overwhelming with all the options and so forth. It seems that the FS TOPO16 shows a lot of detail. Is anyone else using the FS 16' or have any suggestions for adding different layers?

I use it for my off road motorcycle planning.

Works GREAT powerful easy to use and upload onto my garmin. Worth the small fee.

I use CalTopo extensively for most of my outdoor activities. Its user friendly and fairly robust for a guy's side project. I especially like bring able to print maps to scale once I am in the field.

Yeah, it's my go-to. If you're just looking for topos, just use it as an easy interface for whatever topo looks best for your particular mission; don't screw around much with layers and transparancies. For backcountry skiing, I find the slope angle shading invaluable for finding safe routes etc.

I use it via Backcountry Navigator app. Haven't used my Garmin in a couple years now.

Use it all the time for making river maps. Its nice cause you can mark your waypoints for camps, rapids, etc., and download them as a .gpx file, which you can upload into a gps unit or app. Another mobile app I love is Gaia GPS.
