Yakima / Thule Boat Racks

If I have an SUV with factory roof rack and cross bars - do I need to purchase Yakima or Thule Boat Holders, or is just a couple straps around good enough?

Spend the money for extra security - or save?

We have a Jeep and used to utilize the Yakima rack but last summer we took off the Yak and just strapped to the factory bars. Unless you need more room (Yakima would hold many more kayaks as the bars were wider than the factory rack) you can just strap down to your existing rack.

I would say it depends. I had a Chevy S10 blazer and just used the factory cross bars. After one summer of hauling boats the entire rack started to detach from the roof. I had to remove the trim from the inside to access the attachment points and tighten them back down. It was a big hassle and I always worried about the boats flying off after that.

Now I have a different S10 with Yakima cleats and crossbars, haven't had any problems, just finished my second season with it.

Use of the uprights or "stackers" varies with how many boats you'd like to carry. I'm guessing that you can fit two on there right now. A set of stackers would help you put them on edge, allowing for 4-5.

Does that answer your question, or were you talking about the cradles?

I also have a lil Blazer. I am looking at something like the Haulrasier.

Do you prefer the Yakima or Thule?
