the med. varun looks similar stat-wise to the freeride 57. anyone paddle both?

call matti at ten mile creek kayak in frisco, co. He's owned and paddled both and has some time on his hands now that he dislocated his shoulder. I've seen him paddle both and I think he looked better and more successful in the freeride. Freeride is more playboat focused it seems, the varun more river running. I know he has both in stock as well, and is usually willing to make a deal.

Have a Freeride 57, Its a great boat. forgiving, fast, but decent bounce for a river/play boat, throws down well, not as loose as a Biscuit for instance, but incredibly comfortable and easy to paddle. It is much more playful than the old CR series from LL. Plus, this boat has chamfered edges and that progressive hull rocker that most freestyle boats are going to, (see the Rockstar). I don't know how the hull profile is on the Varun. The Freeride's flatwater throwdown-ability is more similar to boats of yesterday, like the EZ, but is very stable on end and cartwheeling in holes and on eddylines is no problem. I recommend it.

I have paddled both.

Varun is super stable, fast and a great all around boat. Great for downriver

Freeride is very stable, decently fast, and surfs great. Awesome for downriver play.

I would say if you are going to be doing a little more river running than playboating go for the Varun. More playing than river running go freeride.

Also the shape is super different between the two. Varun's got an old school throw back shape, freeride looks like a longer playboat
