Shade?

I am looking for the opinions of any fellow boaters that have purchased the River Sombrero. Thoughts? Likes, dislikes, ease of use? They look pretty sweet. That being said they are a large investment for a poor river rat. But what's a guy to do when his girl asks for more shade and you just watched your umbrella fly away like Mary Poppins in the afternoon canyon winds??? Thanks for sharing.

I don't use the brand, but I do have a bimini on my raft. My wife loves it, I actually used it as a sail on Yampa last week. If you have a family, I think it's a must with smaller kids. I found it cheaper online than Sombrero, though I heard good feedback about the company and the product.

Mine is a green Maravia boat, but Scott put a Kelty tarp on his and slept through a huge storm that rolled through that night.

Which ever you end up going with, make sure to get the 8' bimini and not shorter. I tried 6' and it was way too short to cover passengers and the driver.

Just ordered mine - hope to have it next week. Nice folks to deal with so far. I'll post a review after my San Juan trip. I do know that shade is indispensable on a desert trip, and a umbrella doesn't cut it especially in windy conditions.

Where'd you find it? I priced around and couldn't find anything significantly cheaper (when comparing similar fabrics). I pretty much hit the point that I would rather support a rafter than the yachting community.

Casey, in that respect get it from Sobrero, I purchased mine when I was pinching pennies. Material is exactly the same that everyone uses. I just googled it until I found the right price. I think if I was purchasing it now, I'd get it from the rafting dudes.

That's kind of what I thought. It's not gonna happen for me this year, but maybe at some point in the future.

Casey, as far as I know, the River Sombrero's geometry is slightly different than a standard bimini shade. They moved the "secondary" arm up about a foot from the mounting point to allow better clearance for oars. Depending on exactly where on your boat you mount it, it could make a pretty big difference.

From the pictures on River Sombrero — Shade for Rafts I don't see that, climbdenali. It looks like it's about a foot off the base. Exactly like mine. What people usually do with these bimini tops is reverse it so you can clear an oar if you need to.

Are there different models with a higher second arm on Sombrero?

I ordered the sliding track mount option (48"):

Here's what it looks like on a motorboat:

So I figure I'll be able to adjust fore/ aft. But I have a diamond plate walk rail - I doubt you could mount the track on a tubular frame rail.

I just use the hose clamps ($0.50) to hold the T plastic bracket down to the diamond plate tubes. I can just loosen it and adjust fore/aft of it. Cheaper than the Sobrero mounting kit, which is basically the same thing for for $25.
