Replacing drybox strap

Our drybox had the internal wire/strap fail that keep the lid from opening too much, it props it open. Recretec sent me a new wire and rivets to use to secure it. This means drilling out the old riverts, and using the same thing that failed once secured with rivets without any sort of gasket. I don't really want to do this. My experience riveting is not something I picture ending up waterproof.

I'd like to replace it with a strap, and ideally do it without replacing the rivets. Any ideas on how I could secure it to the existing rivet ends?

just a drop of aquaseal or silicone in the rivet should work pretty well.
I suck at rivets too but my boxes are not going to keep water out if they upside down for sure. The only way I would imagine my rivet holes becoming leaking.

Dont use the replacement cable either. I had the same box and problem, drilled out old rivets and replaced with new one, same result. Those cables are junk, nylon strap is the way to go, just use a small rubber washer on the new rivet if you are worried. The hole is already there so drill out the old rivet and start over.

Thanks. I'll go with both aquaseal and the rubber washer. Good ideas. Time to practice my riveting skills....
