Recommendations for PFD

Hello All~

I am new to whitewater kayaking and want to do this right. I have purchased my kayak (Pyrahna Z one) and my paddle (AT G-series Play) and now it's time to get my PFD. Any recommendations for something that is comfortable for hours of fun, yet functional? I've been looking at the Stohlquist Rocker, but thought I would check with you experts first.

I will probably be doing mostly creeking and river running...at least at first.

Thanks in advance for you help!

Steve

There is probably 50 threads on this topic, so I would recommend a quick search and you will have more than enough info to get started.

That said, I don't think the rocker has a quick release/tow setup, which you (and your friends) will want as you get better and start running harder stuff. It will be a good pfd to start with, but you might as well buy a Type 5 and never need to upgrade.

I like the Astral greenjacket. Good rescue features, and some nice padding around your core should you end up splatting on a rock. There are also several pockets to store a pin kit, first aid, sunglasses, etc.

yeah, the Greenjacket is nice, but make sure you know how to use it if you're gonna get one. Take a SRT class.

And yes- a bazillion other threads on this already.

I own a rocker, nice fit, but the usgc label is printed on the inside. I wore it for 2 seasons and it wore off so I can't take it on westwater or any other river section that checks pfd's.
I'm getting the astral green jacket, added bonus its made in the U.S.

I'm in with the Greenjacket. Mine has been going strong for at least 2 full seasons now and I still love it. I'm sure I'll replace it with the same when the time comes.

My Rocker has treated me nice for about 6 months. Very comfortable on long trips and easy to get on and off. The front zip pocket allows me to store a small drybag with my phone, keys, etc. and it has a few extra mesh pockets as well. It does however lack some of the extra safety features of similar PFDs.

I used the crap out of my old astral aquavest 200, now I have the newly released Aquavest LE.

Seems to have a little more flotation, and has the comfy feel of the aquavest.

Don't drink the koolaid!

Kokotat Ronin Rescue. I took a log across the chest on Grape Creek while wearing an Astral, and ordered it from REI the next day.

I loved my Astral AV200, but don't get on with the fit of the green jacket. If you can hold of them Palm make some really good PFDs. I'm currently using the Extrem RV model.

I'm just about to add a review to my site
