How much should someone spend???

Hi, I'm new to the site and I am just getting back into WW kayaking after about a 12 year hiatus. I was wondering how much you all think someone should spend on a good enough quality used WW kayak if they are just getting into paddling. I have a NECKY RIP which is probably 15 years old, but one of my friends needs a boat. I figure he just needs something to learn in and use for 1-2 years till he gets good enough to warrant a new boat purchase? i have heard of people getting boats for $100 or less and I have seen many on this site for $200-$300. how much should he spend to get a boat which will do the job for him? he will be doing class II-III around here and probably not much playing. We are in Cleveland Ohio so there are no real good rivers and no WW shops that I know of within 3 hours so visiting the local shop is not an option. Although when we can find a good shop "somewhere" we plan on making a day trip out of it. At this point he plans to just order one. Maybe from someone on this site. Any opinions, boat suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Luke

I would go on boatertalk.com to look for a used boat. There are plenty of boaters within driving range of you on that site. This site is more specific to Colorado, Wyoming etc... You should be able to pick up a used boat for a few hundred bucks unless you are going for one of the hot new playboats. Try to get a package deal if you can.

Thanks for the advise. I checked it out and did find several boats within a 3-4 hour drive.

As for how much to spend you could get a pretty good setup (boat, skirt, paddle) for $600 and then you could probably sell it again in a few years for a few hundred less. It seems that most boats hold their value (to a point) for several years.
