Dry Gear - Grand Canyon - August

I am hopping on a trip last minute and recently blew one of the gaskets on my dry top. Is it too hot for a full dry suit in the Grand Canyon right now?

Thanks!

Came off the other day and I'd say way too hot.

I have done some pretty long swims in Aug/Sept without a dry suit and I was fine. Some of the swims were on purpose (like Hermit) and some where not planned.

When I was younger and getting close to my 100th trip one of my guide friends was talking me into swimming Hermit on my 100th trip. Unfortunately that trip was a one boat motor trip and so I had no one to be safety for me. That was also my last trip of the year and so I kinda forgot about the idea. Then in 2003 another of my guide friends ran Hermit straddling a paco pad. The next week the guide that was with him was on my trip and so I ran safety for him and he swam it. The next trip he was also on the trip with me so he ran safety for me and I swam it. Hey, I was only 49 years old, how can you expect me to fight peer pressure at that tender age. I am thinking of doing it next year for 200. This time, with a GoPro helmet cam on.

You have a type III PFD, and then put on an extra large type V over the top of that.

Nice form. Passive Swimming! Assume you have read "We Swam the Grand Canyon: The True Story of a Cheap Vacation that Got a Little Out of Hand" by Bill Beer

The extra flotation seems to help.

Thanks for sharing.

My favorite river library book. Easy read with big font and plenty of pix, it can pass thru the hands of many on a three week trip.
