Dog PFD?

Looking to buy my 1 year old 90lb english lab a PFD, does anyone have any recommendations? The RuffWear seems bomber but I noticed NRS and extrasport make one as well for a little cheaper

ruffwear! mine is on its 3rd dog & still completely bomber. make sure it has a handle (makes it easier to pull a 100# plus beast in the boat).

seriously... twice i have been sure i should buy a new one, but when i check it out the damn thing is still basically brand new, except for fading. easily a few thousand miles on it.

make it a real bright color, and make sure it fits very well. a poor fitting pfd is as dangerous for a dog as it is for a person. take the dog to the water to play stick while wearing it so the 1st time he/she swims isn't the first time it has to figure out how to move in the vest.

dogs rule!

The NRS PFD fits my dogs better the the Ruffwear PFD. The NRS is lower profile and seems to let them move more naturally, but the Ruffwear has more flotation. IMHO, if the dog is a strong swimmer and you just want the floatation as peace of mind I'd go with the NRS. If your dog is a tank and tends to sink I'd pick the Ruffwear.

My dog wears a RuffWear and it seems to do just fine for what we are doing (class II and III). She's also only 45 pounds so she might not test it quite as hard as a 90lb english lab.

My dog wears the ruffwear pfd. You can find them on sale all the time - check steep and cheap. I really like how low profile the handle and D ring are, and he can swim just fine in it. Always good to hear about new river dogs!

I tried the various sizes of the Ruffwear and the NRS, and neither sort fit our dog, who's short-coupled and deep-chested. So she's still wearing an old, faded cheapie that fits.

Here she is wondering why I won't let her jump in the river. (I was doing fieldwork on the North Platte, which was running a 10-year flood, and trying really hard not to fall in myself.)
