cooler question

Need to buy a cooler for my raft. I have 40" between the tubes. Is it ok to stick a 41" cooler in there or should I avoid having the cooler rub the sides of the tubes?

i wouldn't

but that is just my opinion. i like a little room to keep things off of the tubes.

coolers usually have a taper. they frequently don't have any rough edges. I would say inflate the boat and try the cooler. If you are concerned about wear you can always add a few rub strikes on the raft with some shore adhesive/stabond etc.

bigger is always better with coolers ...

I have a Riken 14 expedition style raft and they are super skinny. My 85 qt Yeti BARELY fits between the tubes, and most definately rubs on the rubber on each side. I haven't noticed any wear on the tubes and just go with it. I figure, it's designed to run into rocks. My smooth plastic cooler ain't gonna hurt it. Would I do this for twenty years? Probably not. Why not put some astroglide personal lube between the tubes and the cooler? Unless the smell gives you a chubby.....

The rub what you should worry about is on the bottom of the raft, if the floor or tube gets pinched between hard surfaces (a rock and a bottom of a cooler) then you get a hole. On the sides it shouldn't matter too much.

I'd say your main issue will be draining your cooler on longer/hotter trips. I think a 41" cooler in a 40" hole will be a minimal amount of wear- my aluminum drybox is 48" in a 48" hole, presses firmly against the tubes, and I haven't seen wear on the boat in 5+ years. Lifting the cooler out of its bay every day would drive me nuts though.

thanks climbdenali. never really considered the draining issue. i have been borrowing a buddy's cooler and we had to do that everytime we needed to drain it anyways as his fit tight as well. something else to consider before i pull the trigger.
