Cheap cooler mod
I have used nice coolers in the past and Yetis/Engels are BAD-A. However, they cost almost as much as a used boat. Coleman/Igloo? Not that great. Gott(Rubbermaid)? Better, but not by a whole lot. I have not wanted to pony up the 500 bones for a good cooler, or even 100-200 for a marine cooler with stainless steel hardware. My solution? A coleman xtreme 120 with modified hinges. I had this cooler last year(which I returned) and the dimensions were perfect for my boat. I stumbled onto it today for even cheaper...39 $. Last year the screws fell out threatening to damage my raft and the ones that stayed in helped break the ultra-weak hinges. I removed the screws, filled the one dozen holes with gorilla glue, and screwed some harbor freight webbing over the hinges I trimmed when cutting some straps to length. It should work fairly well. If not I have my receipt and the place I bought it from would probably let me return a turd with the right paperwork. If this cooler fails I may just rent a new one every trip, or at least every season like I have done in the past.
