Best pants for portaging?

The last few years I find myself in more and more terrain where I'm portaging in nasty conditions. Thorns. Large, loose rocks on steep terrain. Jungle. You name it.

If I'm in a drysuit I often have to get it patched afterwards. When I wear shorts my legs get bloody and shredded.

Anyone have a personal preference on pants to wear while portaging?
I'm thinking they should ideally not be too heavy, shouldn't stay wet forever (so no cotton), yet be somewhat thorn resistant. Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers!

Cordura gaiters and long shorts.

Also could add in some dual purpose knee pads for both the portage and servicing the dudes who actually ran it back in camp.

Brilliant!

Griz, you are brilliant. Simple cordura gaiters worn on the skin (if I'm wearing shorts) or over a dry suit. Done.

Thank you all!

Dickies
lighter than jeans.
not cotton.
thick enough to keep out the thorns and bugs.
20 bucks.

don't know about the logistics of changing in and out or having to carry wet pants in your boat. I don't think i would want to boat in Dickies.....i actually have rafted in Dickies but have not tried them in the kayak yet.

Chaps—duh, it what they’re made for. Cheap, light, and convenient.
