Anyone recently fly boats with continental airline?

Heading to Costa Rica in two weeks and am trying to take a boat for a friend down. Bought my tickets thru United, but continental is the operating airlines. Their (contin) web page shows kayaks, under special/sports items are allowed, and if the dimensions are within the limits, 200$ each way.

The boat I'm flying is a Mamba, within the cm limits.

Years ago, continental didn't allow boats. Even though the web pages says yes, anyone tried recently?

Thanks

2 years ago i took a kayak to ecuador with continental. their rules state you can have 1 "lightweight assembly" kayak. i brought a copy of the sports equipment baggage allowance with me just in case there was a problem. while checking my baggage the airline representative told me that these rules do not apply to international travel, but the boat was taken anyway. it's always a gamble. i'm rolling the dice this wednesday heading to santiago, chile.

arrive at the airport very early, dress nice, be very polite and helpful, NEVER use the word kayak, and be totally willing to pay.

check out these links from some experienced travelers.

Where is Baer ?: How to travel with a kayak internationally,

How much baggage will airlines allow kayakers?

This is a great line, from whereisbaer:
"If they tell you it doesn't meet the size requirements remind them that it is round and that if you did all the calculus that it would fit in their requirements."

The 2x4s as a rack on a rental car is pretty classic too.
