Scary Strainer in S. Fork Payette
There is a partially submerged log in the Staircase rapid (the one next to the big chopped up pull-out) of the Staircase section on the South Fork of the Payette. The log is on the river right side about 1/2 way down the entire rapid (close to the lower end of the pull-out just above the two ledge holes river center and right). It is visibile on shore but when scouting I was unsure how far out it extended as it went underwater, possibly up to 1/2 way across the river. At the flows I was looking at it went right across the line I was going to run.
Be sure to take a close look as I did not see it until I was almost done scouting. Also there is a log on the river left side of Salom rapid, but the main line is uneffected.
Just a heads up to keep safe out there in the early season, lots o wood floating down. We ran the Grandjean section Monday then opted out of the Staircase section but had a good time on the Main Payette. Go boatin'
