N. Fork Gunny access
For those of you who like to float the North Fork of the Gunnison when there is enough water, there has been an access change at Hotchkiss. Most boaters used to put in or takeout just below the Highway 92 bridge heading out of Hotchkiss toward Crawford. There are now some large boulders in the ramp and a "No Trespassing" sign. That is in fact private property and the landowner is not allowing access.
There is a legal access point about 150 to 200 yards below that bridge located on Delta County Fairgrounds property. Just north of the bridge you can turn into fairgrounds property on Maloney Way. Take the first left which is about 100 yards from the entrance and just before you see get to the white gated pipe irrigation line. The road is a primitive gravel affair, but accessible by car. It takes you down adjacent to the river and there are a couple of spots you can get in or out of the river between clumps of willows. There is not yet a ramp, but the bank is tapered and it is only about a four foot drop to the water. You cannot back a trailer down that bank, so you have to manhandle your raft or kayak up or down. There also is not much of an eddy at the current flows but at least it is legal.
There is an effort in the works to get a better ramp constructed at that site. Right now the current flows are good for floating so let's enjoy the river while we can.
