WW Ice Report?

Can anyone tell me if Westwater is clear of ice? Looking at a Kayak Self support so I can portage shot bridges but don't want the whole canyon to be a skating rink. Thanks, Tony

Tony,

I've heard that presence of ice in Debeque Canyon is a good indicator of whether you'll have ice on R/HT and Westwater. Maybe someone that drives that stretch regularly can give us a visual on this, however if you look at the Westwater Gage, it's currently iced over. The fact the gage at the state line is iced up, and it's in a relatively open location, doesn't bode well for what you're likely to find deep in the canyon where there's much less sunshine.

So, just sitting at my keyboard speculating, it's still a bit early for WW and Ruby Horsethief unless you're willing to bring the crampons/skates/hockey stick and sign on for what could possibly be a real adventure.

Some of the Colorado down near Moab may be clear if you really have to get on the water.

Maybe wax up your skis?

As of this morning, there is lots of ice in Debeque Canyon. Frozen solid from top of the canyon to the cameo dam.

Ice

The Colorado is frozen solid in sections all the way to Moab. I would not chance a Westwater run right now. The narrow sections that travel through the schist before and after the rapids are most likely frozen.

Juneuary continues in AZ. We did a Verde wilderness trip recently that was warm and beautiful. Surprisingly fun boating on base flow.
