Which emergency satellite phone system

Is there one satellite phone system that is better than another for emergency situations.

sat phone

I've used Globalstar for 7 years. of course access to satelites depends on your location. on the grand canyon I'd estimate 30% of time you can get a connection. you always need a veiw to the southern sky, so a deep canyon running east & west will always be a problem. my globalstar plan is $50 per month for 100 minutes, I own the phone.

My guess is that if mrkyak didn't own the phone, he would be using an iridium phone. Much better coverage. I tried using a Goldstar phone in the Grand and it sucked at best. I had to climb all over the place to get a call and then it only lasted about a minute before service was lost. Never could get another call made.

What is the main difference between a iridium phone and a satellite phone?

As I understand, it's a whole different satellite system. I am by no means an expert, just passing along my experience and what I've heard.

Steve at Carbon County Rec. in Price, UT rents them.

Had the same experience as rwhyman. Globalstar was awful in the Grand. Totally unreliable.

Another dude in our group has picked up an Iridium that we tested out on the Middle Fork this year. He got thru to his wife whenever and wherever he was in the canyon. Everytime.
I know which one we're takin on the Grand in March...

I do not mind spending the money as long as the system works. The best way would be to rent both the iridium system and the Globalstar system on very short time bases and experiment with them under various conditions. I am hoping that another adventuresome person on the Buzz has already done this and could pass on the information. Thanks

Sounds like the Iridium system is the way to go. Thank you. Now, do you buy the system and rent the service.

Called around and referenced sites on the internet. Globalstar uses 40 satellites with greater dependance on ground base equipment which helps with clear reception and greater back up capability. But limits reception in steep canyons and valleys. Iridium system uses 66 satellites and 11 backup satellites. Most Iridium system and networking is done in space by the satellites with only one ground base system in AZ. which causes poor quality reception on the phone but much greater reception area capability, in steep canyon areas. The USA military uses Iridium system, I was told. Just thought I would pass this information on.
