Where's Waldo - Clear Water

This isn't a river float but you might want to put this on a bucket list.

Sometimes listed as the third clearest lake water in the world its probably just fourth. After Crater Lake, Lake Baikal and Lake Tahoe Waldo Lake has some of the clearest water in the world.

Its in Oregon at over 5,400 elevation east of Eugene.
37,000 acres makes it only about 3% as big as Lake Tahoe.

The water is regarded as essentially distilled.
Slightly acidic like rainwater.
No incoming streams. Just nearby snowmelt and springs feed it.

Its a lot smaller than Lake Tahoe but Waldo Lake is slightly remote and has an irregular western coastline that is great for exploring and would work well for light weight Kayaker camping.

Visit Shadow Bay and Rhododendren Island.

Lots of volcanos to view.

No fishing to speak of.
Nothing growing there for the fish to eat.

It can get windy there in the afternoon.
Usually would be a better summation.
Get up early, move to the next camp, stay tucked away in a western shore camp.

Here is a nice description by the Oregon Field Guide TV program from 1997 or so.
Just watch the first couple minutes.

The lake is fine.
Good to have watchers though.

Told you that story to tell you this one.

The Governor is about to sign a bill restricting gas motorized boat traffic and float plane use in Waldo Lake.

Waldo Lake sea plane, gas motor ban passes House

The Oregon House of Representatives voted 37-20 Monday to approve a prohibition on the use of gas-powered motor boats and sea planes on Waldo Lake, a popular recreation site east of Eugene.

In April, the Senate voted 18-11 in favor of passage of Senate Bill 602-A, which was introduced by Eugene Democrats Sen. Floyd Prozanski and Rep. Paul Holvey.

“Waldo Lake is an extremely special place that we as a state are privileged to have,” Prozanski said. “I think as the testimony shows, the third-purest lake in the world, and one that has the ability to give people the experience of solitude.”

Oregon has great clear water in many of its rivers.

When you come here in the next few years think about a canoe type camp experience in water that will just take your breathe away.

Clean your gear.
A big reason the float plane law is going into effect is invasive species.
