Westwater in November?

We're thinking about going to westwater this weekend. Anyone know what the weather is like at night and during the day on the river? The water is at 4000. We've got a few newbee girls coming, will they be able to handle it?

We went on Halloween weekend. Had mix of beautiful and pouring rain. Newby kayakers, or raft riders or campers?

New to Westwater or new to kayaking/rafting? It's the perfect level for someone's first time down Westwater but definitely NOT a good section for someone new to kayaking. Though there's not to much of consequence at 4G and any swimmers will just wash through, you can't walk any of the bigger rapids so you pretty much have to have a roll. It would probably scare a first timer away from kayaking for good. Newbies to rafting would be fine on an oar rig but I wouldn't trust them with paddles. Good luck.

No worries. They will be fine. We took many newbies down it at about 6000 and they did just dandy. There were a few swims but it is a class 3 run.

There will be several River Runner guides running it this weekend. (Tony T. and Sonya) Follow them down and you'll be golden.

best to be prepared.an extra change of warm clothes, extra food and liquids would be advised especially if you're gonna have swimmers. hypothermia doesn't take long to set in and paddling the long stretch of flatwater in late afternoon with the wind blowing up canyon when your wet and cold isn't conducive to a pleasant experience.

Found a dead guy floating in the room of doom, November 1999. Thought it was a bad Halloween prank. It wasn't.

You can expect frost in the mornings next to the river. Take a good warm sleeping bag if it's an overnighter. From now till May it could snow anytime. The canyon is deep so the sunshine can be scares at times.

Had some friends run down a couple of weeks ago guiding a Colorado College trip. (Riverrunner guides) They flipped a paddle raft in Skull, and had three swimmers end up in the room. The kayakers couldn't jump the eddie fence with a swimmer on back, so one of the gear boats, (powered by Zulu), was sitting in the eddie below. He was able to ferry across, into the room and pick em all up. (I heard the place is full up with drift wood.) This is the same crew that will be there this weekend, but without the college kids.
