Westwater Gravel Pit!

I respect property rights. I also respect industry. I also am very dissappointed to see a gravel pit operation in one of the most beautiful valleys in the desert. Nothing like the feeling that I am near or in a city while I put my boat in on the Colorado river! Shame on the company and/or owners that are doing this.

Last time I was there last year I was struck by the change as we launched... the hectic, noisy nature of the put in and first mile of float disappeared into water noise and the feeling of smallness as my stress went away with it.

Good point Dan. I suppose I should block this destructive behavior out. Thanks for being the only person in 513 views to comment.

Hi,

The last time the pit was highly active was when the interstate was repaved decades ago. When the plan to do this first emerged a while back, another concern was how that pitiful road in to WW was going to survive all the heavy truck traffic.

Successive owners of the ranch have seemingly struggled with profitability. When BLM was negotiating with them a few years ago for additional land for the ranger station (a never-consummated deal that would have resulted in a much nicer campground and other improvements), the value of the underlying sand and gravel was a major issue, IIRC.

The good news is this current surge in activity is probably unlikely to continue indefinitely. At least we can all hope so...

FWIW.

Maybe this is why the short cut under the interstate is freshly graveled. I am certainly not complaining about that.

Why should a group of people trying to make a living off their land be ashamed? In my mind it's nice to see the fields leveled, irrigation brought in, some animals grazing, and something being done with that old ranch. The gravel extraction is only temporary.

AMEN
As an old river rat, who was actually alive and running when they corked Glen Canyon and the Dolores, I hate to see rivers and the area around them "modernized"

At the same time, I can't tell land owners to stand down, leave the land in it's natural state just for me and my fellow rats, cause in most cases we're around about 4 months of the year. And rarely contribute more than our beer and maybe some trash, never cash in any meaningful way.

There is a happy medium here, if we can get off our "holier than thou, only true guardian of the land" high horse and look at it from the other guy's point of view. I mean, they are the ones who actually pay the taxes on the land.

Ditto and well said from another OF who was around for that corkage and who also owns water rights.

Hi,

I find some posts here to be particularly interesting because the "pit" has been there as long as most of us -- even the old timers -- have been boating Westwater. It's been behind the treeline, completely out of sight, even when there are no leaves on the trees. Yes, there was a gravel pile a bit back from the river, which could be seen from the road if you looked for it. But objectively, even it was far from obtrusive.

Fact is, the real disruption is current equipment operation. And that will go away in time. This gravel/sand source is too remote to be economically feasible as a long-term source of material for the high volume consumers of such stuff -- Salt Lake City and Denver.

Oh yes, and some day there will be another huge flood. Large amounts of sediment will accompany the river as it sweeps across the ranger station and the ranch property. And the pit will be filled once again. The river always wins...

FWIW.
