We Lost a Great Colorado Paddler Sunday

I am sad to say John Graye passed away in his home in Aspen, Colorado. John was a well known and respected open boater throughout the United States. He was a friend, mentor, boat designer, and racer. I know he had many kayaking, as well as, canoeing friends in Colorado and around the country.

If you paddle Slaughter House on the Roaring Fork, good chance you have seen him on the river, as it was his home run. He led me down it 2 years ago for my first and only time so far. I was hoping to paddle it again with him this season.

John would never let us know how old he was. Without giving up the secret, I can tell you he was over 65 and still paddled runs like Slaughter House, Granite, Numbers, Royal Gorge, and 11 Mile in an open boat.

Our crew will miss him greatly. He will continue to be an inspiration to all of us that knew him!

Take care John, we will see you on the other side.

This is a terrible loss. I've paddled with John on the Ark a few times and elsewhere in the state. He was an awesome guy who just belonged on the river. And he sure as hell never acted 65. Does anyone know any more details?

My greatest condolences go out to the family.

You will be missed by all, John.

This got knocked off the front page way to quickly. I'm taking the liberty of bumping it back up. Drink one and pour one for John.
