Question—

My wife also applied for a 2010 permit and neither of us drew.

In the current follow-up lottery, after I put her down as PATL (alternate trip leader) she was unable to apply. So I took her off as PATL and her application went through.

So— if you list another applicant as PATL do you bugger their chances?

If so, why do it?

You actually lose chances by teaming up as those points for not going are in one pot and you get the lowest number out of them all for the group.

You haven't gone in 5 years = 5 points
PATL 1 hasn't gone in 3 years = 3 points
PATL 2 hasn't gone in 2 years = 2 points

If no one has points for the years they paid to be on the wait list, you have 2 chances as a group (lowest number of the group).

Now you all apply individually... the points add up and you now have 10 points on three applications.

Listing a PATL is only good if you don't think you can go, want to blow all your points if you win and let the PATL take over. If everybody knows they are going to go and you want to increase your chances, make a pact and apply separately.

I had this debate with my gang when we originally applied this year... I can cut and past the example with wait list points if you'd like.

The number of launches available in January and December really makes a statement about the allocation of trip dates through out the year. Commercials get all their launches in the more desirable April to October time frame. Privates are spread evenly throughout the year, including the clearly undesirable winter launches. The winter launch allocations for privates should be moved into the shoulder seasons. The demand for launches in Dec/Jan is low enough we don't need a lottery or launch restrictions for that time frame, the weather takes care of it - just self register and go.
