Sad story about the play park not opening this year. Terrific response from very generous donors to meet rather incredible financial demands from the city, but they repeatedly reneged on their promises. In 2014 the opening date was spring 2017 (after Ft Collins demanded kayakers raise $1 million, which we did; opening was then changed to spring 2018 in 2015). I'm not sure there was ever an 'official' change to opening the whitewater park in fall of 2019. The boating community worked REALLY HARD to collaborate with the City and meet their demands. Now that the in-river features are completely finished, the City is making NO ATTEMPT to meet us even half-way to open the river. The only remaining construction is on the banks and pedestrian bridge - nothing in the river.
When there's road or bike path construction, they close it when there's an issue but e.g. leave unobstructed lanes open. At the play park, there's no construction activity evenings, weekends, or holidays. Why can't we use the river channel?? This is no different than road construction - just close the banks, and let us use the river channel. If there's a genuine safety issue, then close the river. But leave it open the rest of the time.
A full closure is unreasonable. Here's a Channel 7 story on it.
Call and/or write your Ft Collins Council member. We met all the City's demands, but they're not delivering on their promises.
