Poudre whitewater has a fairly short season. Sadly for your son, he will not paddle the Poudre more than a week or two of very low water at the shoulders of the season unless he stays in FC for the Summer. Even staying 3 weeks after class should let him get some really good high water. But it doesn't usually come up before May 15, and it is usually really dead by August 1.

Not open yet. Features are done but the banks are still under constructions. Starting to look like they won't have it done in time for this season.

Sad story about the play park not opening this year. Terrific response from very generous donors to meet rather incredible financial demands from the city, but they repeatedly reneged on their promises. In 2014 the opening date was spring 2017 (after Ft Collins demanded kayakers raise $1 million, which we did; opening was then changed to spring 2018 in 2015). I'm not sure there was ever an 'official' change to opening the whitewater park in fall of 2019. The boating community worked REALLY HARD to collaborate with the City and meet their demands. Now that the in-river features are completely finished, the City is making NO ATTEMPT to meet us even half-way to open the river. The only remaining construction is on the banks and pedestrian bridge - nothing in the river.

When there's road or bike path construction, they close it when there's an issue but e.g. leave unobstructed lanes open. At the play park, there's no construction activity evenings, weekends, or holidays. Why can't we use the river channel?? This is no different than road construction - just close the banks, and let us use the river channel. If there's a genuine safety issue, then close the river. But leave it open the rest of the time.

A full closure is unreasonable. Here's a Channel 7 story on it.

Call and/or write your Ft Collins Council member. We met all the City's demands, but they're not delivering on their promises.

I suspect the city has the authority to close the river to recreational use by claiming it's a safety issue. But the law is unclear, and to know for sure someone has to be issued a citation, take it to court _with a good attorney_, and then follow through the appeals process.

I think a more productive, and more rapid, route may be to strongly encourage everyone that reads this to write to the Ft Collins City leaders and ask them why they've not kept their part of the deal, and to open the whitewater park to river (only) use when there's no construction activity in the river - which is likely to be about 95% of the time.

The email for the City Leaders (City Council, City Manager, etc.) is: [email protected]
