Split mtn to Sand wash? Is it worth doing with Desolation

How long does it take and is a worthwhile add on? All I can tall from the guide is that it doesn't have rapids.

Thanks

It's FLAT

It is extremely flat, lake-like even. Depending on flow and your willingness to row (or motor) it can take 5-7 days.

I think that motors are not allowed for a stretch of it also, not sure but I think I saw that on a sign there while taking out last year. Something about bird habitat. You ought to check before going

Motors are not allowed in the park but once you leave the park it's international waters; everything goes. It's a long, flat, windy trip to Sand Wash, bring lots of gas and liquor. I'm glad to have done that section but doubt I'll do it again.

OK. You have convinced me that this is not a positive addition to Deso. Thanks

We did it in May, at high water several years ago. It took us 30 hours to get from the Split Mt. Takeout to Sand Wash. We floated overnight. 100 miles of the flattest water god put on this earth.

It's a fantastic addition to Deso. You float through a waterfowl refuge and some really pretty country. There are campsites and you will have the river to yourself!

If I was adding miles to Deso, however, I would add the 100+ below Deso rather than above. It's all flat until the confluence, but it's much more channelized and canyon-ish.

Do it unless you are scared to row a little flat water. If you are interested in the stretch why not? Beautiful, whats 5 days on the river, go for it.

adding the hundred miles below deso requires either a significant vehicle portage, or running a river-wide dam. The dam is possible to run, but it was scary, and I probably woudn't run it again.
