Scam on Mtnbuzz Gear Swap!!!!

hey there family -

hope all is good. just wanted to notify everyone about a scam that has recently occurred here on Mountainbuzz gear swap. Thefts and robbers unfortunately lie among us, so beware of international buyers who offer to pay with a cashier's check (which later proves to be counterfit) in an amount over the selling price with the difference to be wired by Western Union to handle shipping costs. super heads up and wariness on this scene!!! check out this link, as it explains exactly whats happening out there - http://www.umcu.org/fintools/scam802.htm

be cautious. hope the season finds us all well with good sessions ahead. take care out there.

Thanks Dunbar. Just thought I'd add this as well, be very careful when accepting cashier's checks. No lie, I've seen 7 counterfeit checks come through my bank this week. They look soooo real its incredible. Most even have watermarks, so don't let that fool you.

You must get any cashier's check you receive verified. Don't call any fake numbers that they put on the checks either. Either look up legitimate bank numbers on the web, or take it to your bank and have someone verify it's authenticity.

Don't deposit a cashier's check into your account until it is verified either, as they have next day availability. If you write checks or withdraw cash on the fake check, the bank will hold you liable.

People have the belief that cashier's checks are good as gold, and they are, if they're legitimate.

This one has been going on for a while all over the Internet. If you have anything questionable like that, set up an account with Paypal, and have the other guy pay you that way.

Not to rub it in, but I agree. Haven't we covered this already?

I think everyone has figured out they're not going to receive $8 trillion dollars from a royal monarch in Nigeria who wants to buy your used Wavesport X for $200 bucks.

You'd sure think that people wouldn't fall for this stuff, but in my world, (Consumer Protection Officer), constant consumer education is the only defense. If I can stop one person from being scammed, I've had a good day.

I thought most of the world new about phishing scams too, but read yesterday that 70% ( ) of those that receive a fraudulent e-mail requesting personal information actually respond. That blew me away. So any chance I personally get to spread the word, I do so, regardless of who I .think might know it all already. And that's why I thank the original poster...he's obviously concernerd for people's welfare as well!

Also,

As IT consultant, I see all kinds of scams and viruses and other stupid stuff.

The CIA or FBI is not monitoring your computer for porno. If they are, they will not send you an e-mail with an attached file for you to open to verify.

Bill Gates will not give you $1000 for forwarding an e-mail to someone...ever, I can assure you he does not care what e-mails you forward.

Swiffer wet jet will not kill your dog/cat/baby, this is a hoax.

Ebay, Chase Bank, or anyone else will NEVER send you an official looking e-mail asking you to "confirm" your PIN, account number, social security number, or any other personal information.

No legitimate buyer will ever send you more money than what you are selling as a "mistake" and ask you to send a check for the difference.

Nobody in Nigeria that you do not know will ever just give you millions of dollars for no reason.

The most prevailing way to compat these kinds of fraud/scams/viruses is to use common sense.

If only the general population had as much common sense as us.
