San Juan

Anyone done the San Juan is the last couple weeks?
Mexican Hat to Clay Hills.
I'm heading down soon.
156R rafts.
I have high hopes for some fun.
Is it a float or a drag at 450-500cfs?

Last October we spent 7 days from Sand Island to Clay Hills. The flow was around 600cfs. We saw many people above Mexican Hat but not a single person outside our group over the 4 days below there. It is not as if we outran everyone else--there was a layover day at Honaker Trail. Once we got to Steer Gulch, it seemed evident why there were no people. There was a LOT of wading to criss-cross back and forth across the river looking for flow. Don't remember any dragging, we were in IK's. Rafts would have been difficult to manage.

Did Sand island to clay hills last July/August Launched at 650 and steadily dropped to 500 on takeout day. We had two 15' rafts and a 14'er Didn't get stuck even one time! Take your time, look at the water and have fun!

Thanks. Sounds doable. Steer gulch to take out is only ~6 miles.

Just did it at 416cfs and had to get out a few times and push but had only a 14ft raft with 3 people and all the gear but it was doable.

A lot of times we like to do Slickhorn to Clay as the out day.

That becomes a real slog and more work than desired at those flows. If much of a wind comes up, reading the channel becomes difficult and an issue.

Just floated march 24-28.
Flows at Bluff were around 420-480 cfs.
Very doable. Two 15 ft and one 14 ft boats.
Gov't was a pinball, but no stuck boats. The party before us stuck one for about 10 minutes, but pulled it off without too much trouble.
Camped at slickhorn and steer gulch. Lower channel was easy to read. Had to get out maybe 2-3 times and push a little, but not bad. Seemed low enough that several sand bars were exposed and easy to miss. It was a little bit of a row but worth it.
Great weather and not much wind.
Fun trip and great canyon. I'd do it again in a heart beat...
