Salida East? Other area primitive camping? HELP!

Hi,

Some friends and I are headed to Salida this weekend and are hoping to camp on the cheap - AWAY from the RV crowds.

Anyone know what the deal it is with Salida East? Can you camp there? I've heard that you can, but then I've also heard otherwise. How is it?

Also - is there other primitive camping close by to Salida, like on some of those county roads that head into the NF east of town? If so, what areas are good to check out.

Thanks for your help!

Brad

Do you know what the price is at Angel? It's a pretty cool area. I'm okay with the $4-8 I find a lot of places but have totally been ripped off before when I was desperate.

Go west on US50, about 1-2 miles west of Poncha Spgs intersection with 285. Look for a small brown sign that says Shavano-Tabeguache Trailhead. Turn right (north). After one stop sign, continue north, road turns to gravel, after about 1 mile of gravel road, you will find numerous free camping ops on top of a ridge heading towards Shavano with views as far as the Buffalo Peaks to the north and the Continental Divide to the west and Monarch Pass area to the southwest.
