Never been to one of these events but planning on coming this year.

Is there any open play time in the features or are they all closed/tied up to the general public attendees for the weekend? Is it useless to bring a playboat if I'm not competing in any freestyle competitions?

You are more than welcome to come with your playboat and have a good time. We do have a lot of downriver type events, but we also encourage the paddlers to simply have fun. There is a great crowd at the RGWF and they would love to see kayakers in the feature having fun between events. Because there are a lot of downriver events and waves it takes a little time so you are welcome to play between the waves of competitors. I will have another post later with more details and likes to individual kayak events.

We also want to mention to the kayakers to find a partner and get in the R-2 Raft Race. You never know you might win and take home some more cash.

If you want kayaker interest, it sure seems like it would make more sense to have events FOR KAYAKERS. Instead of asking us to switch sports...

Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival

The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is coming up on June 20th and 21st in Caņon City, CO. The event will be held at Centennial Park adjacent to the Whitewater Park. There are several events for kayaks including the Royal Gorge Downriver Race, the Kayak Boater X, the Expression Session, and new this year the Kayak Big Air Competition. There is a total of more than $4,000 in prize money at the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival this year and you can enter the events, have a good time, and maybe win some money. You may register for the events online or at the event.

The Kayak Big Air should be a lot of fun and let see if you are willing to go extreme at the RGWF this year.

After spending the previous weekend at FIBARK in years past the RGWF is a pleasant change. You can move around without bumping into people, get a beer as soon as you want one - no 30-45 minute wait, and the porta-pottys are always open. Granted the RGWF does not have the big name music acts and kayakers FIBARK does, but it doesn't have the crowd either. And there's plenty of time for private boaters to get out there and enjoy.
