Range Life safe and sounding off

Just got an email from TG and the go ahead to post some of the more juicy bits.

"it was amazing. 3 days of unreal whitewater .. half a portage around the entrance to a big gorge, the one that sent kurts team runnin ... mile after mile of read & run BC class IV ... no flat stretches, all whitewater ... some big'ns ... unreal scenery, best ever ... "

"changed character after the big trib on r-right, more a big water feel, 2 -3K cfs, lots of gorges with compression features & ledges, entered totally gorged out section way past comfortable time on day 2, knew we were in great bend, but found a nice camp anyway .... woke up, studied maps & revised gradient forecast to say that today could be the steepest day, definitely the deepest ... river turned red from a flash, scarey... ran some big boulder rapids in a gorge, got to a huge rapid that maybe might have gone if the river felt like being nice at that moment ... went into a totally overhung huge gorge with a monstrous boulder chockstone thing that formed a tunnel into the unknown ..."

"bryan & i bushwhacked through the worst tangle of vines & bullshit ever only to find that the gorge past the tunnel was good to go, but went on for a half mile & then dropped into another deeper gorge. no way out & no real opp to scout. map said another 20-30 KM of totally gorged section, woulda been suicide to keep going. we opted to portage, but didn't know if it was even possible. took all day to get boats 200ft off the river, piero & i scouted for escape only to find a sketchy knife ridge traverse with no apparent way to access flatter ground .. back down for sleep .. up in morning sans boats hiking to knife ridge & then rapp down into bowl to machete out a trail thru the jungle, made good time, found trail, continued throughout morning/day humping our shit straight up, found cabin, found burros, found main trail ... walked all goddam day, spent night in shitty little pueblo ..... ate a lot."

That' the short version. There is a new satphone call on the blog here
2006 IR Vacation to Hell...The Rio Huallaga with details on the whole expedition. Great stuff. These guys got it done! Sicksters! Three days deeper into the last unrun gorge of the Amazon and they forecast the possibility for finishing this thing in the satphone update so check it. They should also have a full day 1 report up on the blog soon so stay tuned. So rad. I'm going to Peru ASAP.

Thanks for the heads up. Was wonder'n what the story was the other day, and stoked to hear that all's good in the hood.

One things for sure... that's gonna be some awesome video to check out!

It sounds like they paddled half the total planned river length. So are they totally done? Epic mission but did they completely bail on the 2nd half?
