Pumphouse to State Bridge

We're doing Pumphouse this weekend. My first time there.

How tough is it to find a campsite at Pumphouse?

We're putting in Saturday morning and taking out on Sunday. Being leisurely. Any recommendations for a campsite say 10 miles down?

Thanks!

10 miles seems like it would put you close to Rancho. There are some campsites on the river, and there's the Radium site several miles into the run. Depedning on your style, I'd normally stay at Radium before Rancho. Rancho can get rowdy from what I hear, and I've usually got the kids with me.

We may be up there too, but just for the day. Wherever you stay, enjoy!

I would try for one of the Benches campsites just below Yarmony. Get an early start on saturday as they will fill up quickly.

Rancho is about 7 miles in. Bigwatertoby is right - grab a bench site below Yarmony and get there early. Or, you could camp above Radium, but after the hot spring, on the right at the historic cabin. It also gets taken early, but if you're on early, you should be able to snag it. There is even a toilet at that site. It'll be a short day on the water if you decide to camp here, but it's a really nice site. Have fun!

Pumphouse flows...what is too low?

Trying to get in a few more overnight family trips. Haven't done the upper Colorado before, but all I've read in threads sounds like it will be a fun overnight trip to take the family. When does the pumphouse stretch really start to get bony? Have I already missed the window with this one? How low a flow would you recommend I float this one? Thanks!

It doesn't. While more water = more fun, i've rowed it (with toddler) as low as 400 without incident.

Lower flows isn't as much of an issue with it being bony as it is with slow currents and the amouont of rowing that you need to do. I went at 850 earlier in the year and again at 3500 later on. Big difference in how much more work it was to row the lower flow through the flat stretches. If there is a headwind, then it's a lot of work.

All that said, it's still fun, especially with kids! Go nuts!
