Pipe - 1 1/4 vs. 1 1/2
Faced with a decision and would appreciate advise from this more knowledgeable group.
Building a frame for an 18 foot raft for a long 99 percent flat water trip but heavily loaded. I'll get more waves from the wind than the rapids. Where I live, all the frames I've seen and/or used have been 1 1/4 inch pipe using fittings to be completely modular. All of the parts and accessories new and used available locally are based on the NRS sized 1 1/4 inch pipe. In that regards, there are some real advantages to going with the smaller pipe; however, I am now contemplating ordering pipe from outside my state and can get the 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch anodized 6061 at close to the same price.
I have no desire to have bigger pipe if not needed; however, I do note that many of the big rafts frames manufactured outside are made with the bigger pipe. Having said that, I have also noticed that some of the raft builders using the bigger pipe are using the 1 1/2 inch 6063 which I'm not sure is much stronger than the 1 1/4 inch 6061. Since I will not be doing any pipe bending, I would not being going with 6963 in either case.
Based on the above, recommendation for pipe size? Has anyone had 1 1/4 inch 6061 pipe fail?
